2020 Caucus Resolution on Militarism & Global Warming
Whereas:
- Sanctions are a violation of international law and an act of war.
- Since 2001, the U.S. war in the Middle East has killed over 800,000 people directly and has injured and killed many more indirectly, according to a recent Brown University study.
- This U.S. war in the Middle East has cost the American taxpayers $6.4 trillion since 2001.
- $1.6 trillion could pay accumulated college student debt for the last 30 years. This money is being paid by us, and is not going to funding education, reducing poverty, rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, or financing a Green New Deal.
- In January 2020, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock to 100 seconds to midnight, the end of the world. This is the closest to nuclear annihilation the world has been in the 73-year history of the clock. The clock was moved closer to midnight because of the danger of U.S.-motivated nuclear war and climate change.
- The U.S. war in the Middle East is being fought to preserve an economic system that places profits over human needs and the health of the planet, a system based on fossil fuels and their profits. This economic system is causing global warming.
- The U.S. military is the single largest institutional producer of greenhouse gases in the world, a war machine which is contributing to global warming and killing our planet.
Therefore, be it resolved that as a party, we support:
- An end to U.S. war threats on Iran and an end to the U.S. occupation in Iraq.
- An end to U.S. wars for oil and resources.
- An end to the use of sanctions to coerce other governments & punish their civilian populations.
- Slashing the bloated U.S. military budget.
- Leading the charge on ending the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere on the shortest timeline.
