12/1: Press conference to respond to Obama’s Afghanistan announcement

LOCATION: Mayday Books, 301 Cedar Ave S, Mpls.

Tuesday evening, President Obama will announce a major escalation of the U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan. He expected to use his speech to justify sending at least 30,000 more troops to fight the now eight-year war on the Afghan people. The first 9,000 Marines are scheduled to deploy later in December. The Anti-War Committee will be participating in the following series of emergency actions over the next few days, all aimed at responding to this announcement, and protesting the coming surge in the destructive war and occupation of Afghanistan. Please join us.

Representatives of Military Families Speak Out, Iraq Peace Action Coalition, Anti-War Committee, Twin Cities Peace Campaign-Focus on Iraq and Women Against Military Madness are among those planning to attend the press conference. Plans will be announced for Twin-Cities area protests against the escalation in the days ahead. Activists in cities across the U.S. are projecting major protest actions against any escalation in the U.S. war against Afghanistan. A statement issued by Twin-Cities antiwar organizers says, in part, “The war in Afghanistan has never been the ‘good war;’ it has never been about fighting terrorism, but has always been an effort to increase U.S. military and political domination in the region. More U.S. troops will not bring about peace, justice or development, but only more destruction.”
