Victories in Resistance, Solidarity Against Injustice
Saturday, February 15th 3- 5pm @ the Minnehaha Free Space, 3747 Minnehaha Ave, Minneapolis, MN
In December 2013, the anti-war and international solidarity movement won two big victories:
*Samer Issawi was released from an Israeli prison after apowerful hunger strike and credited international solidarity as critical to giving him strength.
*Lynne Stewart, who was unjustly imprisoned for “material support for terrorism” for representing her client, was given compassionate release so she could struggle against breast cancer at home with her family.
Here in Minneapolis, another big victory came in January 2014:
* CeCe McDonald – In June 2011, CeCe McDonald fought off a racist, transphobic attack. She was sentenced to 41 months in a men’s prison for 2nd degree manslaughter, despite clear evidence of self-defense. She came home in January, having become an international symbol of the resistance and resilience of trans women of color.
These cases inspired international support and attention not only because of the extreme injustice faced in each case, but also because Samer, Lynne and CeCe all spoke from behind the prison walls, to demand greater justice for all.
Speakers include:
- Lynne Stewart
- CeCe McDonald
- Sabry Wazwaz
- Jess Sundin
The Anti-War Committee worked on these cases, and invites you to an event to celebrate newly-won freedom, to reflect on how to do political prisoner solidarity which builds our movements, and to hear from Lynne Stewart and CeCe McDonald themselves! You’ll also learn how to take action in solidarity with other activists facing political repression including Rasmea Odeh.
Organized by the Anti-War Committee. Endorsed by Communities United Against Police Brutality, Freedom Road Socialist Organization, MN Coalition for Palestinian Rights, MN Immigrant Rights Action Committee, Twin Cities Socialist Action, U of MN Students for a Democratic Society, Veterans for Peace (chapter 27), Welfare Rights Committee, and WAMM.
