RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS

Honoring the Twin Cities Peace Campaign, WAMM, and the Anti-War Committee

Whereas, the Twin Cities Anti-War Committee began in December 1998, with 13 people who committed civil disobedience
to protest the bombing of Iraq and to organize a broad-based peace and social justice movement which stands in solidarity with those communities, here and abroad, who are affected by U.S. foreign policies; and

Whereas, the Twin Cities Peace Campaign – Focus on Iraq and Women Against Military Madness have sponsored a vigil on the
Lake Street Avenue bridge since June, 1999, which focused first on trying to end the devastating sanctions on Iraq that were causing
the deaths of 3,500 – 5,000 children every month, then on trying to stop the pre-emptive war against Iraq, and more recently on ending the war and occupation, which is literally destroying that country; and

Whereas, the same groups have held vigil in the offices of members of Congress who support funding the war to call for an end to the war on Iraq, an end to funding the war and to bring the troops home now; and

Whereas, the tide of public opinion has turned against the war in Iraq. Two-thirds of Americans are now against the war, and 71
percent oppose President Bush’s plan to send additional troops; and

Whereas, Global Days of Protest will mark the fourth  anniversary of the U.S. war in Iraq. The Anti-War Committee will  be taking buses to the national march on the Pentagon on Saturday, March 17, 2007 and there will be a march in Minneapolis  on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at 1:00pm with a concluding rally near Loring Park;

Now, Therefore Be It Resolved by The City Council of The City of Minneapolis:

That the Minneapolis City Council hereby expresses its strong support for the struggle for peace and salutes the Twin Cities Peace Campaign, WAMM, and the Anti-War Committee on the fourth anniversary of the war in Iraq.
