Emergency protest of Trump anti-Cuba announcement

June 16, 2017 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Our right to travel to Cuba is at risk!

This Friday in Miami, President Trump is expected to make an announcement about rolling back Cuba policy, although the event has not yet officially been confirmed.

The Minnesota Cuba Committee and other organizations are planning a protest for 4:30 pm on Friday at the Minneapolis Federal Courthouse, but the date is still tentative because of the unpredictability of events and of the president’s actions. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter or check our website for the latest information on the announcement and protest.

The Obama policies, carried out since December 2014 in cooperation with the Cuban government, have produced many tangible benefits for the peoples of both countries even as the more than 50 year U.S. embargo has continued. U.S. travel to the island has increased significantly and the Cuban people have received additional employment opportunities from that travel and more U.S. citizens have been able to witness first-hand the achievements of the revolution. Cuban citizens have been given greater opportunity to travel to the United States as the result of changed U.S. policy and life saving Cuban-developed drugs are now undergoing clinical trials in this country. Unfortunately, it appears that the Trump administration is preparing to roll back the gains of the last three years to the detriment of the peoples of both countries, including the endangerment of the constitutional right of U.S. citizens to travel to the island.

We urge opponents of this potential travesty to continue putting pressure on lawmakers. However, because It is unlikely that Trump can be stopped before he proclaims these disastrous changes, the Minnesota Cuba Committee, Women Against Military Madness (WAMM), Twin Cities Peace Campaign, Antiwar Committee, the Haiti Justice Committee, the Minnesota Peace Action Coalition and other organizations are calling for a public protest on Friday, June 16, at 4:30 pm, the day of the expected announcement. (Previous information called for a protest on the day after the announcement.)

We will provide signs and banners or you can bring your own. Please watch for information from the Minnesota Cuba Committee confirming the date of the protest.

Resist the Trump agenda and stand up for our freedom to travel and trade with Cuba!
