This year marks the 14th year of the U.S. war on Afghanistan. On October 15, 2015 President Obama reversed his previous position and declared that the U.S. military will keep 5,500 troops in Afghanistan when he leaves office in 2017 which ensures the U.S. will continue this war to another presidency. The next president will become the third U.S. commander-in-chief to oversee the war!

The Impact of 14 Years of War:
Icasualties.org reports that the U.S. has lost 2,372 people. The Watson Institute reports, “As of January 2015, more than 26,000 civilians are estimated to have died violent deaths as a result of the war. Many Afghans dealing with ill health and war wounds find it difficult to get to hospitals and clinics because violence makes roads unsafe. The war has exacerbated the effects of poverty, malnutrition, poor sanitation, lack of access to healthcare, and environmental degradation on Afghans’ health.” The insecurity that U.S. warfare has brought to Afghanistan is best demonstrated by the international uproar over the U.S. bombing of a hospital the week before the war turned 14 years old.

U.S. Commits War Crime:
The U.S. bombing of the Doctors Without Borders’ hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan on October 3rd killed 22 people. The Pentagon acknowledged earlier this month that its Special Forces were responsible for the deadly attack, but only after changing the official story at least four times, including initial denials of culpability and claims of justification.

On October 15th Doctors Without Borders reports that the U.S. military’s forcible intrusion into its hospital potentially destroyed evidence of its war crime and underscores the need for a truly independent investigation into the U.S. bombing of their hospital.

Doctors Without Borders has launched an online petition demanding that there be an independent investigation into the bombing of their hospital, which is a war crime. The Anti-War Committee encourages our supporters to sign it so that we can have a large showing of national and international support for investigating this atrocious war crime!

The people of Afghanistan deserve to live in peace without the threat of U.S. drone strikes, hospital bombings or meddling into who their government is. The Anti-War Committee calls on its supporters to call President Obama to say NO to his plan to continue the war on Afghanistan! Please join us in expressing our outrage!
