DESCRIPTION:Palestine Bannering – Remember the Sabra & Shatila Massacre\nThursday\, September 17th @ 5pm on the Loring Park footbridge (on the side of the park near the Walker Art Center) \nOn September 16-18\, 1982\, pro-Israel militiamen murdered hundreds of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians living in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camp in Beirut\, Lebanon. The massacre was carried out at the orders of the invading Israeli army\, which had surrounded and besieged the neighborhoods before the attacks. This year on September 17\, to remember and denounce the massacre we will be bannering over I-94\, at the Loring Park footbridge at 5pm. \nThe anniversary comes on the heels of the horrific Beirut explosion of August 4\, which killed at least 180 people and crippled Lebanese infrastructure. What’s less known is that Lebanon already had been struggling under new US sanctions\, quietly imposed in June. US sanctions are contributing to Covid deaths\, inflation\, shortages and mass unemployment in the Beirut explosion aftermath. Last week\, the Trump administration discussed plans for even more sanctions on Lebanon. \nThe Sabra and Shatila Massacre reminds us that solidarity with Palestine means solidarity with Lebanon. Half a million Palestinian refugees still live in Lebanon\, where conditions remain poor. Lebanon and Palestine share an interconnected history of struggle against US-Israeli occupation. The massacre took place during Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon\, which led to Israeli occupation of Lebanon’s south until 2000. In 2006\, another Israeli invasion was repelled\, but Israel inflicted enormous harm across Lebanon with Gaza-style aerial bombings. The US has its own direct history of violence in Lebanon\, including a US military expedition in 1958\, bombing campaigns in the 1980s\, and the current sanctions regime. \nOn September 17\, join us to remember the Sabra and Shatila Massacre by demanding: \n–Right of return for Palestinian refugees to their national homeland\, Palestine\n–Immediate lifting of US sanctions on Lebanon\n–End US aid to Israel\nOrganized by the Anti-War Committee

In the West Bank\, Israel prepares to declare its illegal settlements “annexed” and further diminish the sovereignty of the Palestinian nation. In Minneapolis\, people are rising up against police murders and anti-Black racism. \nRepression in Palestine and US cities like Minneapolis is connected by the tactics and technology Israel develops and exports to American law enforcement. But the resistance crosses borders too. Palestinians in the diaspora stand with Black victims of police violence. A global movement to free Palestine grows and gains legitimacy. \nThe Minnesota Anti-War Committee presents an online panel on the multinational resistance from Minneapolis to Palestine. \nPanelists:\nDanya Zituni is a member of US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN) and is currently based in Detroit. Previously she was a staff member in Chicago for the Arab American Action Network (AAAN) and active with USPCN in Chicago. \nTessneem Abdallah is a board member with American Muslims for Palestine MN. \nMeredith Aby-Keirstead is a founding member of the Minnesota Anti-War Committee. She travelled to Palestine in 2002 and in 2009 was one of the Anti-War 23 who were raided by the FBI in part over alleged connections to blacklisted Palestinian organizations. \nAngel Buchner is a member of TC Coalition Justice for Jamar which has been organizing as a part of the Black Lives Matter movement for 5 years. And the Israeli government continues to shut off power to Gaza for huge parts of the day. \nThis is a critical moment to fight for Palestine & Palestinian rights\, and we need to keep up the pressure to demand an end to U.S. aid to Israel!  We have the opportunity to raise the demand of Free Palestine. Since that time new organizations have joined our coalition. Our members have traveled as part of delegations to Venezuela\, Ukraine\, Syria and Cuba. We have held conferences on U.S./NATO military bases in Baltimore\, Maryland and Dublin\, Ireland. We have organized against the militarization of police departments\, AFRICOM\, and punishing sanctions against other nations. Our members prevented the illegal Venezuelan coup government from taking over the Washington embassy\, while others walked picket lines with striking workers.  In 2020 we mobilize against ecocide\, white supremacist policy and war in all its forms. We gather to put the issue of peace before the voters in an election year and to protest against anti-immigrant policies.
