SUMMARY:Protest Isreali Defense Force Lawyer\, Moshe Halbertal\, Defending Israeli Attacks on Palestinians as “Ethical” at the U
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 3rd\, 3:30 pm – 5pm outside of the U of M Law School\, Mondale Hall 25 on the West Bank in Minneapolis. \nThe U of M is hosting Moshe Halbertal for a special lecture at the U of M Law School to give the talk “Protecting Civilians: Moral Challenges of Asymmetric Warfare.” Halbertal co-authored the military code of ethics which guides the conduct of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) during its bombing campaigns in Gaza\, the rounding up of Palestinians for detention without change\, and the military occupation of Palestine. Halbertal criticized the Goldstone Report which points to the atrocities committed by the Israeli Defense Forces against the civilian population in Gaza. \nJoin us for a protest to denounce Halbertal’s alleged expertise on ethics and to demand the U of M not use our tax dollars to promote war crimes. \nOrganized by the Anti-War Committee. Endorsed by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP UMN).

SUMMARY:Two Actions to Say NO to Obama's plan to continue the war in Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:Call in day and Sign Petition\nTuesday\, October 20th – All Day\n*Email or call President Obama @ 202-456-1111 to say “Bring the Troops Home Now!”\n*Sign Doctors Without Borders Petition: https://www.change.org/p/tell-president-obama-to-consent-to-independent-investigation-of-kunduz-hospital-bombing \nThis year marks the 14th year of the U.S. war on Afghanistan. On October 15\, 2015 President Obama reversed his previous position and declared that the U.S. military will keep 5\,500 troops in Afghanistan when he leaves office in 2017 which ensures the U.S. will continue this war to another presidency. The next president will become the third U.S. commander-in-chief to oversee the war! \nThe Impact of 14 Years of War:\nIcasualties.org reports that the U.S. has lost 2\,372 people. The Watson Institute reports\, “As of January 2015\, more than 26\,000 civilians are estimated to have died violent deaths as a result of the war. Many Afghans dealing with ill health and war wounds find it difficult to get to hospitals and clinics because violence makes roads unsafe. The war has exacerbated the effects of poverty\, malnutrition\, poor sanitation\, lack of access to healthcare\, and environmental degradation on Afghans’ health.” The insecurity that U.S. warfare has brought to Afghanistan is best demonstrated by the international uproar over the U.S. bombing of a hospital the week before the war turned 14 years old. \nU.S. Commits War Crime:\nThe U.S. bombing of the Doctors Without Borders’ hospital in Kunduz\, Afghanistan on October 3rd killed 22 people. The Pentagon acknowledged earlier this month that its Special Forces were responsible for the deadly attack\, but only after changing the official story at least four times\, including initial denials of culpability and claims of justification. \nOn October 15th Doctors Without Borders reports that the U.S. military’s forcible intrusion into its hospital potentially destroyed evidence of its war crime and underscores the need for a truly independent investigation into the U.S. bombing of their hospital. \nDoctors Without Borders has launched an online petition demanding that there be an independent investigation into the bombing of their hospital\, which is a war crime. The Anti-War Committee encourages our supporters to sign it so that we can have a large showing of national and international support for investigating this atrocious war crime! \nThe people of Afghanistan deserve to live in peace without the threat of U.S. drone strikes\, hospital bombings or meddling into who their government is. The Anti-War Committee calls on its supporters to call President Obama to say NO to his plan to continue the war on Afghanistan! Please join us in expressing our outrage!

SUMMARY:Protest for Justice for Palestine: Say no to the Israeli killings of Palestinian youth
DESCRIPTION:In the just 48 hours\, four Palestinian youth have been shot and killed in clashes with Israeli occupation forces. \nThese clashes have come in response to weeks of escalating attacks\, where the Israeli military and settlers in the West Bank have injured hundreds of Palestinians with live ammunition\, rubber-coated steel bullets and beatings. Hundreds more people have been injured by tear gas\, and scores have been arrested. Israeli soldiers have also reportedly shot at more than a dozen Palestinian ambulances and assaulted paramedics. Under Israeli police protection\, settlers have set fire to countless Palestinian homes and fields\, while the Old City of Jerusalem is on lock-down and Muslim men under 50 are barred entry to attend prayer at holy sites. According to the Palestinian Prisoners Society\, “Israeli soldiers kidnapped 562 Palestinians\, including dozens of children\, mainly in occupied Jerusalem\, in September\,” and the mass arrests are ongoing. \nIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to use an “iron fist” against Palestinians\, saying\, “There are no limits on the activities of security forces.” He plans to speed up the demolitions of Palestinian homes and expand the use of administrative detention. These attacks on basic human rights aim to deliver collective punishment to the Palestinian people\, and extend the military occupation of Palestinian land. \nInternational law recognizes the right of Palestinians\, like any occupied people\, to resist. Stand with us as we stand up for justice in Palestine and say no to the killings of Huthaifa Sulaiman (18)\, Fadi Alloun (19)\, Abdul-Rahman Shadi Mustafa (13)\, and Mohannad Shafiq al-Halabi (19).

SUMMARY:Minneapolis gathering to mark 5 years since the FBI raids
DESCRIPTION:On September 24\, 2010\, the FBI carried out coordinated raids on the homes and offices of anti-war activists\, searching for evidence of “material support to foreign terrorist organizations. The raids were part of a massive government operation that sought to criminalize our work against US policies of war. \nFive years later the investigation is “ongoing.” The steadfastness of the targeted activists\, who all refused to cooperate with the government witch hunt\, along with the overwhelming support from our communities\, has so far made it impossible for the government to bring any terrorism charges against us. Shamefully\, they have moved to prosecute two veteran activists in our movements. We beat back the case against Chicano leader\, Carlos Montes. And now\, we are fighting for the freedom of Rasmea Odeh\, an icon of the Palestininan liberation movement in Chicago. \nWe’ve come a long way in the last five years. Join us in Minneapolis to celebrate our victories – defeating the grand jury that could’ve jailed all 23 who refused to testify; defending the freedom of Carlos Montes; and continuing to build a movement that stands with the people of the world against US wars and aggression. \nWe’ll have food and drinks\, and call on everyone to redouble their efforts to win freedom for Rasmea Odeh!

SUMMARY:Book Group: Battle for Justice in Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join the Anti-War Committee for a discussion of the book The Battle for Justice in Palestine. \nIn this essential work\, journalist Ali Abunimah takes a comprehensive look at the shifting tides of the politics of Palestine and the Israelis and makes a compelling and surprising case for why the Palestine solidarity movement just might win. Please let us know if you are interested in joining but need to borrow a copy of the book. We’ll have treats to share and talk about what we learned and how we can apply this to our organizing. \nMore on the Author– Ali Abunimah is the author of One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli Palestinian Impasse\, and co-founder and director of the widely acclaimed publication The Electronic Intifada. Based in the United States\, he has written hundreds of articles and been an active part of the movement for justice in Palestine for 20 years. Organized by the Anti-War Committee.
