Support the Anti-War Committee
November 18, 2021
Dear Supporters,
As we approach the close of 2021, the first year post Trump, the Biden administration has done little to change the trajectory of US imperialism, and the fight for peace is as important as ever. Our work this year has seen us continuing the struggle for Palestinian liberation and an end to US financial aid to Israel, resisting military action in Afghanistan, opposing U.S. sanctions, and discussing increased US tensions with China.
Free Palestine!
With Israel’s attempts to seize the homes of Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah, as well as the United States’ continued financial support of the Israeli occupation, Palestinian solidarity is still our main campaign. The Anti-War Committee has worked alongside our friends in the Minnesota Chapter of American Muslims for Palestine, If Not Now, and Jewish Voice for Peace to challenge the Israeli apartheid state including organizing multiple protests last spring to denounce attacks on Gaza and the West Bank. The May 23rd Uptown Minneapolis protest was over 4,000 people and the May 15 Al-Nakba protest in Columbia Heights drew more than 2,000 people! We continue to exert pressure for an end to aid to Israel even when the issue of Palestine isn’t on the front page, through highway bannerings, protests at Klobuchar’s office, petitioning drives at Open Streets and Pride, and protesting at Northrop Grumman where weapons are made in Plymouth, MN and used to kill Palestinians in Gaza.
Hands off Afghanistan!
We have been protesting the US war and occupation of Afghanistan since 2001 and this year was no exception. As the US executed a hasty retreat from Afghanistan, it’s understandable to fear for the safety of the Afghan people. But it’s likewise important to remember that the US presence in Afghanistan was never to protect Afghan people but instead to further the United States’ own interests. We stand in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and their right to forge their own future. This year we organized protests and call-in actions to denounce continued airstrikes in Afghanistan, and we will continue to do so.
Sanctions are war!
Since our founding, the Anti-War Committee has always opposed the use of sanctions. We know from Iraq that sanctions are a deadly foreign policy weapon that disproportionately target babies, children and the elderly. It is unethical to deny another country healthcare and other necessities in an effort to try to provoke regime change. During an international pandemic, it’s especially indefensible to make it harder for a country to take care of its citizens. We have continued our organizing against U.S. sanctions on Iran and Venezuela to raise awareness about the unethical nature of cutting off trade, including access to vaccines and other healthcare necessities, during the COVID pandemic, through highway bannerings and in our speeches at city-wide actions.
No New Cold War with China
Our members have participated in several webinars, including speaking nationally, through the United National Antiwar Coalition. As China’s growing economy continues to solidify them as the main global rival to the United States, we in the Anti-War Committee have noticed an increase in propaganda intended to sow doubt about the health of the Chinese economy as well as their claim to their historic lands. We must resist this blatant attempt at damaging China as the United States continues to try and bolster its failing imperialist model.
Solidarity at home
In 2020, Minneapolis became the leading edge in the fight against police brutality. With the political defense of the 646+ activists who were arrested on November 4, 2020 (which included almost our whole committee), and marches around the trial of Derek Chauvin, we have continued our involvement with and commitment to the Black Lives Matter movement!
