Cynthia McKinney has faced political repression and risked her life for her outspoken criticism of Israeli treatment of Palestinians. Her six terms as a U.S. Congresswoman ended when pro-Israel lobby groups led a well-financed smear campaign against her. In 2006, a right-wing radio host / FBI-trained agent provocateur announced a program topic suggesting that Cynthia McKinney be lynched on her way to the polls and published her campaign address. As a passenger on The Dignity, a humanitarian relief boat to Gaza in 2008, Ms. McKinney braved an attack by Israeli gunboats that repeatedly rammed and tried to sink The Dignity in international waters.

Double Standards Apply to Peace Activists

If you speak out against U.S.-sponsored human rights violations, and you are not rich or powerful, you might get a visit from the FBI. The recent “witch-hunt” against peace activists is expanding, and there are now 24 grand jury subpoenas served to peace activists based mostly in Minneapolis and Chicago. Although there have been no charges, the activists were informed that this investigation is about providing material support for foreign terrorist groups.

“Don’t Spy On Us, FBI” Say Minneapolis Activists

It was a declassified FBI document that Lucia Wilkes Smith held up before a crowd of Minneapolis peace activists. It was declassified in name only because nearly every word on the dozen or so pages had been blacked out for national security reasons.

“The first letter I got from the FBI said ‘we don’t have anything on you’, said Wilkes Smith a well-spoken gray-haired woman. She had made a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request of the FBI. The American Civil Liberties Union and others had urged her to file the request because the FBI had been spying on anti-war groups in Minnesota prior to and during the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul.

FBI: Lighting the Terrorist Fuse?

Terrorist plots are suddenly everywhere. In Baltimore last week, a 21-year-old construction worker tried to blow up a military recruitment center. In late November, federal law enforcement officials arrested a Somalia-born teenager for plotting to bomb a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland, Oregon. In October, a jury found the Newburgh Four guilty of planning to bomb two synagogues in the Bronx.

Free Speech Down the Rabbit Hole

We are living in a time in which things are increasingly upside down.

On June 21, the Supreme Court ruled in Holder v. Humanitarian Law Centerthat promoting nonviolent political activity and the rule of international law could get you jailed for “giving material aid to terrorism.”

Yet it is U.S. Government policy to pay warlords and Taliban warriors as “subcontractors for security” in Afghanistan. The court said nothing about that policy. Rather, it voted to restrict the activities of people seeking roads to peace.
