Take Action for Ethiopia! NO US INTERVENTION! NO SANCTIONS!  #NOMORE

Across the US and the world, Ethiopians have taken to the streets as well as social media to demand an end to US & Western interference in Ethiopia and to correct Western media misrepresentations of the war between Ethiopia and a group representing the country’s ousted former government, the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

This September, the Biden administration imposed sanctions on the democratically elected government of Ethiopia, declaring the regional conflict somehow a “national emergency” for the United States. In November, Biden piled more sanctions on Eritrea, a neighboring Horn of Africa country also involved in the fight against the TPLF. Still more sanctions have been introduced to the Senate by Senator Chris Coons. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and USAID head Samantha Power have declined to rule out military intervention in the conflict when asked. National Guard and Special Forces troops, as well as three warships, have been recently stationed nearby in the Horn of Africa.

In November, Ethiopians in the nation’s capital of Addis Ababa protested outside the US embassy to demand an end to US interference in the country. Ethiopians see this interference as constituting support for a terrorist group with the intention of dismantling Ethiopia’s national sovereignty. On social media, Ethiopians across the world joined with the hashtag #NoMore — No more US/western meddling, disinformation, or sanctions. In Saint Paul, MN, hundreds of Ethiopians protested outside the State Capitol building, and demonstrations were held in at least 24 other cities across the US. The crowds demanded: “Joe Biden: Hands Off Ethiopia!” “Hands Off Eritrea!” “USA! Stop Supporting TPLF!” “Ethiopia has voted: our leader, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed!”

The Anti War Committee is committed to opposing all US military intervention as well as economic warfare like sanctions, which are designed to provoke civil unrest by preventing countries from meeting the needs of the people. Please join us in calling on our representatives to stand with the Horn of Africa and oppose further meddling in Ethiopia & Eritrea. We cannot stay silent as the US war machine hurtles toward another catastrophic intervention disguised as humanitarianism.

Suggested script for Senators:

I am writing/calling today to urge Senator ______ to oppose US intervention in the Horn of Africa. The United States must respect the sovereignty of Ethiopia and their democratically elected Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. I urge you to vote No on bill S. 3075, which calls for draconian sanctions on Ethiopia. I call on Senator ______  to represent her constituents by speaking against all further interference in this conflict including telling Joe Biden to reverse his harmful sanctions on Ethiopia and Eritrea, which will only further harm innocent citizens who are suffering through a war in their home, and telling Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that the American people will not stand for military intervention in the Horn of Africa.
