For Release: Monday, November 30, 2009

Twin Cities anti-war activists will gather on Tuesday evening to watch the Afghanistan escalation speech to be delivered by President Obama. Immediately following the speech, statements will be presented giving an anti-war response to what is expected to be the announcement of a major escalation of U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan. The event will be held:

Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 7:00 pm
Mayday Books, 301 Cedar Ave. South, Minneapolis

Tuesday evening between 7:00 and 9:00 pm, calls may be directed to Mayday Books at 612 333-4719.

Representatives of Military Families Speak Out, Iraq Peace Action Coalition, Anti-War Committee, Twin Cities Peace Campaign-Focus on Iraq and Women Against Military Madness are among those planning to attend the press conference.

Plans will be announced for Twin-Cities area protests against the escalation in the days ahead. Activists in cities across the U.S. are projecting major protest actions against any escalation in the U.S. war against Afghanistan.

A statement issued by Twin-Cities antiwar organizers says, in part, “The war in Afghanistan has never been the ‘good war;’ it has never been about fighting terrorism, but has always been an effort to increase U.S. military and political domination in the region. More U.S. troops will not bring about peace, justice or development, but only more destruction.”
