NATO Will Not Bring Peace to Ukraine

NATO Will Not Bring Peace to Ukraine

July 10, 2022

US and NATO escalation in Ukraine risks beginning World War 3. This is not hyperbole. As long as the war continues, it risks spilling over into NATO states. The NATO charter states that if any one state of the alliance is attacked, all other states must join them in war.  As reported in The Mirror on June 19, 2022, General Patrick Sanders, the top military official in Britain, has briefed every serving soldier that they must “get ready to fight Russia in World War 3.” NATO has resolved to increase its European rapid-response troops from 40,000 to 300,000 and to admit Sweden and Finland into the alliance. The New York Times has confirmed that the CIA is operating in Ukraine, and it is likely that US special forces are present as well. All of this increases the risk of nuclear catastrophe.

The notion that US and NATO military aid will help Ukrainians is predicated on the narrative that Ukraine can win the war by defeating the Russian army, and this narrative is falling apart. On June 14, 2022, US Pentagon official Colin H. Kahl admitted that the war will only end with negotiations. It is imperative that these negotiations occur as soon as possible in order to avert world war, and  Ukraine’s own interest to negotiate as soon as possible. The US is disincentivizing negotiation by continuing to send weapons.

This is because it is in US interests to keep the war going. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated, on April 26, 2022, the purpose of US military aid to Ukraine: “We want to see Russia weakened.” In short, the US expects Ukrainians to fight and die on its behalf. The war in Ukraine has also served as a massive handout to US arms companies: the US has already spent a staggering $50 billion on the war, largely in military spending. This money could be spent on satisfying human needs here in the United States — the day after Joe Biden announced another round of spending on weapons to keep the war going, he stated that US could not afford to forgive student debt.

Likewise, sanctions on Russia do nothing to help Ukrainians, nor do they damage the interests of Russian leaders such as Vladimir Putin. Overwhelmingly, sanctions have hurt working-class Russians. The purpose of these sanctions is to deny markets to Russian business, opening up space for US corporations to increase sales and reap more profits.

This war is a threat not only to the people of Ukraine but to all peoples of the world. Join us in demanding:

— An end to US weapons shipments to Ukraine;

— An end to NATO expansion;

— An end to sanctions on Russia.
